Who can believe it’s almost September? I feel like it was just yesterday that I was excited for Memorial Day weekend. Time fly’s when you’re soaking up every bit of summer that you can. The end of August marks a time every parent loves and every child hates…back to school! Whether you’re a teacher trying to jazz up your classroom for the first week of school or you’re a parent trying to send your kid to school with a little gift for the teacher here are a few back to school ideas that involve flowers!

Pencils Are for More Than Writing
Here is a neat trick to create a piece that could be used all year. Using hot glue, glue pencils around a cylinder vase. Tie a colorful ribbon around it when the glue is dry and you have yourself a fun, school orientated vase! Fill with flowers weekly for a little burst of color and a fresh scent! Fun Trick: Instead of just using #2 pencils try colored pencils! If you’re vase is short, try crayons.

An Apple a Day
In the last blog I wrote about coring a pineapple to build an arrangement in. This month the fruit is an apple! White the arrangement will be much smaller in an apple it will surely please any teacher! Put a few stems of flowers from your garden in a cored out apple and send it to school with your child! The teacher will love it.

Repurposed Rulers
Rulers are a school supply that you find yourself buying every year…but why? It’s not like they get used up like a pencil. So collect all your old wooden rulers (or wooden yard stick) for this next idea. Cut the ruler into 3 inch sections. Using hot glue, glue them into a box shape. When you have your ruler box you can then put a plant inside or even a small arrangement. This would be a great present for a math teacher or for centerpieces for a PTA meeting.

We have had some record heat this year and its only August 1st! With no relief in sight I’ve decided to talk about how to beat the heat with some cool summer centerpiece trends. Just one look at these new trends will have you cooled right down!

The Pineapple Arrangement
Now filling fruits and veggies with flowers is by no means a new trend. Every October I’m carving out at least a few pumpkins to fill with red and yellow mums, purple cabbage and cat tail reeds. However, this is the year of the pineapple arrangement. Just one look at this cool new trend will have you dreaming of a tropical breeze and a Pina colada! DIY by simply chopping off the top and coring the pineapple. Fill the core with floral foam or just simply water. Have fun arranging with tropical hibiscus or ginger. The brighter the colors the cooler you’ll feel!

Lemon and Lime
When life gives you lemons…make a floral arrangement out of them! Slice them up and carefully place them in any vase. Not only will they hide the stems of the flowers they will add such a beautiful color pop to any arrangement.

No matter what you pick for your summer event just keep those colors bright and tropical and people will feel refreshed just looking at them!
